Speech Therapy
So we're nearly two and still not a lot of words happening on the home front. He gets what he wants, due to being assertive and somewhat clever with mobilising chairs to access high points. All his other little mates have been babbling, and chatting away for what seems like forever. Better get some intervention then.....
We've been visiting our wonderful speech therapist since 2008. Identifying low tone, which also impacts the whole mouth structure and movement, meant that we needed to help Flynn strengthen his mouth muscles before he could achive what we identify as 'normal' sounds. That is, getting his tongue back into his mouth and in the correct position to reduce lisping and other querks which makes little kids talk sound so cute!
They have some great stuff on their wesite at All Communication Matters including this:
Speech is the production of sounds for example producing the 'p' sound. All children will experience difficulties producing sounds at one stage of their lives as sounds develop at different ages. When a child is having difficulty producing sounds that are appropriate for their age their speech may sound unclear.
Below is a guideline for when sounds develop:
0 - 3 years : p, b, m, w, t, d, n, k, g, h, y
4 - 5 years : s, z, sh, ch, l, j, f
5 - 8 years : All of the sounds clearly - Last sounds v, th, r

What exactly is low tone and what is Sensory Processing Disorder and how do they fit into this section?
The muscles appear to be less firm than usual, and the child appears to be floppy and have loose joints.

So why is my baby not rolling and sitting like the other children? Why is he not grasping for toys and passing his hands across his body (crossing the midline)? Why does my toddler run like he's just got off a horse?

Podiatrist
Does the thought of your child having to sit and wait for a cast to set make you avoid even making the trip? Or having them struggle and stuff up a simple foot impression?
We have tried 3 types of orthodic casting procedures and nothing beats the 3D digital version which the Sydney Sports Medicine Centre provides. If it's good enough for our elite athletes, then it's good enough for me! And a bunch of fabulous practicioners to top it off.
Their Podiatrists use a 3D digital scanner to obtain an accurate model of your foot which then is paired with a customised prescription based on your biomechanics, your injury, your footwear and your sporting needs. For running, walking and sports, a customised orthotic provides shock absorption, proprioception, support and stability, whilst allowing for normal levels of foot and lower limb motion. Orthotics are often used in conjunction with a stretching and strengthening program.
Flynn's sporting needs are to run, jump, roll or basically any whole movement !
